Farmer Jailed for Allegedly Running Over Woman with Tractor

PINE BLUFF, AR - A Jefferson County farmer is accused of fatally running over a woman with his tractor.

Glen Shelton, 44, was arrested Sunday night after a short manhunt for the death of 26-year-old Melonie Hughes on U.S. 425 on Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses told the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office that they saw Hughes running out of a farm field and onto the highway, with a tractor following her.  Witnesses told authorities that the tractor ran over Hughes on the highway, where she died.

Shelton told authorities that he ran over Hughes after she shot him with a shotgun.

A judge found probable cause to keep Shelton jailed until the prosecutors determine what charges should be filed.  Shelton has a hearing on May 21.

Investigators have not yet confirmed whether Hughes fired a gun at Shelton.
