Emerson Tells Bush She's Upset with Politics of War Debate

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson is upset with both Republicans and Democrats for using politics to fuel the debate over the war in Iraq.

The Missouri Republican says she conveyed that message to President Bush this week in an unusual White House meeting organized by moderate Republicans.

Several lawmakers at the meeting warned Bush that public support for the Iraq war is declining and could threaten GOP political hopes without significant improvement.

Emerson says Bush "listened pretty darn hard and he understood."

Last month, Emerson didn't take a position on the Iraq spending bill that contained a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. forces.  She says she voted present to show her frustration.

Bush later vetoed the measure.
