WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson is cutting her food budget this week to $3 a day.
The Missouri Republican is trying to raise awareness about hunger and the problems of feeding a family on a food stamp budget.
On a shopping trip at a Capitol Hill grocery store yesterday, Emerson loaded up on spaghetting and chicken breasts. But she had to leave strawberries and avacados behind. They were too expensive.
Emerson says it shows the challenges people face trying to keep a healthy diet on food stamps.
Emerson sponsored legislation this month that would boost federal nutrition programs by $20 billion over five years.
The food stamp program is designed to supplement other programs for low-income people.
