Suspended Newspaper Editor Enters 'Not Guilty' Plea in Court

MOUNTAIN HOME, AR - Kandra Branam, the suspended managing editor of the Baxter Bulletin newspaper at Mountain Home, has entered not guilty pleas in circuit court to charges accusing her of sheltering her brother, wanted as a fugitive from Colorado.

Branam surrendered to authorities Wednesday to face the charges, and was released on $5,000 bond.  Yesterday, she entered her not guilty pleas and was told to return to court on July 12.

Bulletin publisher Betty Barker Smith said Branam was suspended Wednesday pending resolution of the criminal charges against her.

Branam's brother, Thomas Wells, also was charged Wednesday with four counts of forgery and unlawful possession and use of a birth certificate.  He appeared in court Wednesday and also entered not guilty pleas, and a court date was set for July 26.
