Burglars Free Pit Bulls, Steal Cash from Animal Shelter; Dogs Kill Cats

TEXARKANA, AR - Three pit bull dogs killed seven kittens and an adult cat at the Texarkana Animal Shelter after burglars broke into the facility and freed two of the dogs.  A third dog got out of his cage on his own.

Police say the burglars stole money, took a safe and vandalized the director's office Tuesday night.

Investigators initially believed the burglars killed the seven kittens and adult female cat.  However, necropsies showed that the cats all had puncture wounds from the dogs.

Shelter director David Warrick says the adult cat, whose name was Miss Tabby, served as a surrogate mother for very young kittens who came into the facility.
