MARION, AR - Crittenden County's Quorum Court is considering an ordinance to charge inmates for their stay in the county jail. The ordinance has already passed on a first reading, as that happened at Tuesday night's meeting.
The ordinance must be read two more times and must be approved before it is enacted.
The charge would cover the costs of transportation to the jail, daily housing costs and medical expenses.
According to The Associated Press, about one-third of county jails in the U.S. had "pay to stay" programs as recently as 2004.
