14 Year-Old's Body Found in North Jonesboro

JONESBORO, AR--Jonesboro Police are investigating on the city's north side. Sunday afternoon the body of a 14 year-old boy was found behind the Alpine Apartments near Parker Park.

It seemed to be a normal Sunday for residents in the Alpine Apartments until Jonesboro Police showed up around 3:30.

"We responded to the call and when we got here we found a young African American male who was deceased," said Jonesboro Police Chief Mike Yates.

Police found the body behind a set of apartments on the back side of the complex with an apparent gunshot wound.

"We've managed to establish his identity as Cameron Smith, 14 years in age," said Yates.

Police say Smith did not live at the apartments and so far his death is somewhat of a mystery.

"Apparently he has been in foster care at some point. He is from the Jonesboro area and right now it is a suspicious death," said Yates.

Residents we spoke with said Smith recently attended Success School, but had quit and spent most days hanging out around the Alpine Apartments. Residents also said they heard gunshots Saturday evening, but when police responded, they searched the area and apparently didn't find Smith's body.

Several of Smith's friends said they just saw him Saturday evening. They said he was a nice kid, who was well liked around the neighborhood and his death is a big surprise.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation and if you have any information that might help you are encouraged to call the Jonesboro Police.
