LITTLE ROCK, AR - Some Arkansas Republicans aren't enthusiastic about the support extended to abortion rights by one of the leading candidates for the GOP presidential nomination, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The former New York City mayor has said he is personally opposed to abortion, but supports a woman's right to choose.
State Senator Gilbert Baker of Conway, outgoing chairman of the state Republican Party, says he considers the issue important for the GOP. He said that, while he admires Giuliani's leadership of New York following the 2001 terrorist attacks, the Republican hopeful faces an uphill battle in Southern states.
Jason Miller, a spokesman for Giuliani's campaign, dismissed those concerns Saturday. He said that when people take a look at Giuliani's conservative record as a whole, they'll see he cut taxes, reduced crime and tackled government bureacracy.
But a poll last year in Arkansas indicates that Giuliani faces a skeptical GOP when it comes to his abortion stance.
