MEMPHIS, TN - Some Mid-South Marine Reserves are just hours away from an overseas deployment. And they'll leave behind proud parents, families and even fiances.
Some 200 Marines and their families showed up for a send-off Wednesday afternoon at the Reserve center. Approximately 40 Marines in the Memphis-based unit are from northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri.
Their mission will take them deep into Iraq. "The primary mission is that of an infantry battalion that involves security, a lot of patrolling from secure fixed facilities," said Ben Hull.
The unit is scheduled to serve in Iraq for one year before returning home. The group's first stop will be for six weeks of training at Camp LeJune, North Carolina. Then it's on to Iraq.
