Water Patrol Reports Three Drownings over Long Holiday Weekend

PERRY, MO - The Missouri State Water Patrol says at least three people drowned in the state's waterways over the long holiday weekend.

Yesterday, a 27-year-old man drowned in the Meramec River near Sullivan.  The Patrol says Daniel Fitzpatrick of High Ridge was wading with members of his family in three to four feet of water when they stepped in a hole.  Fitzpatrick's body was recovered about 30 feet from the riverbank.

A 7-year-old boy from Quincy, Illinois, drowned Sunday near a campground at Mark Twain Lake in northeast Missouri.  And a 53-year-old man failed to surface after jumping from a pontoon boat Sunday into Clearwater Lake in southeast Missouri.  Friends pulled Charles Defur from the water several minutes later.  He was pronounced dead at a medical center.
