Commission Gets OK for Limit on New Car Paperwork Charges

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Car dealers charging as much as $250 for paperwork involved in selling a vehicle could find that figure cut nearly in half by new rules proposed by the Arkansas Motor Vehicle Commission.

The proposal won the endorsement yesterday of the Legislative Council's Committee on Administrative Rules and Regulations.

The rule is being proposed under a new law approved by legislators this year and signed by Governor Beebe in March.

The new law allows motor vehicle dealers to charge a service and handling fee in connection with the sale or lease of a new or used motor vehicle, for the handling, processing, and storage of documents, and other administrative and clerical tasks.

The law requires the commission to set the service and handling fee at no more than $129.
