Traffic Stop Nets Drugs and Cash

JONESBORO, AR--Jonesboro Police say the streets are safer tonight after they've arrested one of the city's biggest drug dealers.

Marcus Hunter was arrested Thursday. Officers say they found cocaine and thousands of dollars in cash when they pulled him over.

The Jonesboro Police Department is looking good after a traffic stop on Thursday turned up more than they expected.

"In most cases we either get dope or cash, but in this case we got both," said Patrolman Blake Bristow of the Jonesboro Police Department.

Based on information from another officer, Bristow searched the driver of the car, Marcus Hunter and found five and half ounces of cocaine and thousands of dollars in cash.

"The drugs were found on the person along with $2500 cash and a search of the vehicle produced almost $23000 under the backseat," said Bristow.

Bristow says police only make one to two arrests involving this much cash a year. In addition, most cocaine arrests net less than an ounce. With over five times that amount on him, Hunter is in some hot water.

"Right now, he is going to be charged with posession of a controled substance with intent to delivery, which is 10 to 40 to life which is a class "Y" felony," said Bristow.

Police say Hunter is probably one of the top five upper level cocaine dealers in Jonesboro, so his arrest is an important one.

"We get the drugs off the street. Get the smaller guys and keep working our way up the food chain," said Bristow.

In addition to having another drug dealer off the street, residents can feel safer knowing the cash will help to go to the war on drugs here in Jonesboro.

"Now that we seized it, the crime lab will get 20% right off the top and the rest of the money will go to the police department and drug task force. The money will be used to purchase equipment to help us in our investigations," said Bristow.

Hunter was in court Friday for a probably cause hearing.
