VARNER, AR - A convicted killer stabbed a 19-year-old guard at the state's Cummins Unit five times before being subdued yesterday.
State prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler says 39-year-old Kelvin Barnes likely slipped out of his handcuffs and stabbed the guard with a knife made from wire from a prison fence. The guard, who Tyler did not identify, suffered wounds to his right side, with punctures to his forearm, underarm, hip, middle finger and an area behind his ear.
The guard is expected to be released from a local hospital today.
Tyler says Barnes, who is serving a 50-year murder sentence from Union County, has more than 80 violent incidents attributed to him since being imprisoned.
