CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, AR -- The body of a Jonesboro senior citizen was found in a burning field this afternoon.
65-year-old Bill Greer was discovered by Bono and Jonesboro Fire Departments responding to a grass fire along Highway 63, just north of the Jonesboro Auto Auction.
It started as a regular call...
"The Jonesboro Fire Department and the Bono Fire Department responded to a grass fire and they got here and began putting it out and found the body in here," said Craighead County Chief Deputy Rick Thomas.
Thomas says 65-year-old Billy Greer of Jonesboro was apparently burning a field when the flames got out of control.
"What we are seeing out here is a fire that might have gotten out of hand, come across the field and he may have been trying to put it out," said Thomas.
Officials will conduct an investigation, but suspect no signs of foul play.
"We have looked the body over and the area over and at this point it does not," said Thomas.
Thomas warns that weather can play a role in deadly situations like this one and to always use extreme caution when burning.
"Out burning fires, especially on these hot days like this, the fire can get away from you quick. There is a breeze out and the grass is very dry," said Thomas.
