Two Arkansans Injured in Explosion at Louisiana Gas Plant

HAUGHTON, LA - Authorities in Bossier Parish in northern Louisiana say two Arkansas workers at an idled gas-processing plant are recovering from injuries they suffered in an explosion yesterday.

According to Bossier Parish sheriff's spokesman Ed Baswell, the men were using a shredder to cut up old storage tanks at the butane and propane gas-processing plant once operated by Centerpoint Energy.  Baswell said a spark from a collision of metal with metal ignited a gas pocket in one of the tanks.

The injured workers, both from El Dorado, were identified as 38-year-old Joel Killingsworth, who had burns over 24 percent of his body, and 23-year-old Andy Morgan, who suffered burns to eight percent of his body.  The men were transported to the burn unit at LSU Hospital in Shreveport but have since been released.

Baswell said it was fortunate that the explosion was no larger than it was, as it could have been disastrous.
