Judge Sets July 20 Hearing in Delaplaine School Case

PARAGOULD, AR - A judge has set a hearing for next month to decide whether to drop the Greene County Tech School Board from closing the Delaplaine school campus.

Residents formed the Delaplaine Community Association after the Tech board decided to close the Delaplaine elementary and high school because of declining enrollment and dilapidated facilities.  The association sued, and Circuit Judge David Burnett set a July 20 hearing to consider an injunction to keep the school open.

The GCT board voted in November to close the school, and in May, it reaffirmed that decision.  The resolution passed by the board cited several factors, including declining enrollment, the poor state of buildings that would require spending $800,000 to meet state standards, the difficulty of hiring and keeping teachers at the campus, and a disproportionately high cost of operations.
