FBI Now Involved in Investigation of West Memphis Boy's Death

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - The FBI is investigating the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy by a West Memphis police officer last month.  Steve Frazier, a spokesman for the FBI in Little Rock, says the agency is conducting an inquiry into the fatal shooting June 22 of DeAuntae Farrow.  The Arkansas State Police also is investigating.

West Memphis police say the boy was outside playing with a friend while two officers were on a stakeout of an adjacent apartment.  Police have said the boys ran by, yelling, and officers told them to stop.  Police say Sergeant Erick Sammis fired when it appeared Farrow was holding a weapon and moved.  Family and friends of the boy have said the boy had only chips and a soda in his hand.

Frazier says when the FBI finishes its investigation, it will forward the information to the Justice Department.
