Handicapped Parking Law May Have Opposite Effect

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A new state law to ensure parking space for people with handicaps may actually have the opposite effect.  The law says that in lots with more than one handicapped parking space, the parking spaces with extra wide aisles for wheelchair users can only be used by vans.  The wider spaces are designated "van accessible."

But handicapped people who don't use wheelchairs find themselves now coming upon lots where all the spaces are designated "van accessible" and they have no place to park.  Democratic Representative Sandra Prater of Jacksonville says there may be a need to fine-tune the law.

Arkansas' handicapped parking laws have been changed ten times in the past 20 years.
