State's Wheat Crop Down from Last Year

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas winter wheat farmers took a hard hit from the late spring freeze this year.

The federal Agriculture Dept. says wheat farmers in Arkansas harvested an average of 40 bushels an acre this year.  That was only about two-thirds of the yield for the crop last year, when the winter wheat harvest averaged 61 bushels an acre, setting a record.

Across the nation, the average harvest this year was 41.6 bushels an acre, about the same as last year.
