CARUTHERSVILLE, MO - Deputies in Pemiscot County on Friday executed a search warrant on property just outside of Steele, with the cooperation of the Caruthersville Humane Society, Steele Police Dept., and animal control officers from Steele, Hayti and Caruthersville. Eighteen dogs were removed from the property in what Humane Society officials described as "deplorable conditions."
Humane Society investigators investigated a complaint from the Sheriff's Dept. about conditions of animals being housed at the residence of an 83-year-old man. After several visits, the warrant was executed to remove the animals, many of whom were immediately treated for dehydration, malnutrition, respiratory problems, infections and severe flea infestations. Many of the animals had to have large chains, electrical wires and coat hangars cut to remove them from captivity.
