More Soybean Rust Found in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Agriculture officials say soybean rust has been found in two more southwest Arkansas counties.

The fungus can cause drops in yields of 50 percent or more.  It has been found in Lafayette and Miller counties.  Last month, the rust was found in soybean acreage in Little River and Hempstead counties.

The Cooperative Extension Service is recommending that all soybeans in extreme southwest Arkansas in their early reproductive stages be sprayed with fungicide.  Farmers in other parts of the state are urged to watch their crops closely for any sign of the disease.

Soybeans are Arkansas' top row crop, with about an estimated 2.8 million acres planted this year.
