JONESBORO, AR -- Jonesboro residents spend money in their own town. It's a known fact, but it's the people from the outside areas that can really push the continuing commercial development in Jonesboro.
"The chamber says there are twice as many people here on a daily basis than what sleep here at night so that's what's a huge contributor to the economy in general," says Fred Dacus of Fred Dacus Associates.
Last September a big announcement was made that a Hilton Garden Inn would soon be built off of Caraway Road, but nearly a year later, ground still hasn't been broken here on the property where Lowe's once stood.
"The developers as you may recall are from Northwest Arkansas. They have a number of projects going on and there may have been delays in some of those other projects. I don't know but they're ready to roll now," says Dacus.
Fred Dacus, who served as the broker in the deal last year with developers NE Arkansas hospitality, says things are not in jeopardy and are actually about to take off.
"He's going to be here next week getting ready to begin construction. He says construction is going to begin within the next 60 days," says Dacus.
The site is located on Caraway Road and will stretch over to Fair Park Avenue covering just over 7 acres. It will include restaurants, among other things.
"Adjacent and as part of the Hilton development, enterprise car rentals has purchased an acre. They're going to be building a very nice facility there for their operation as well," says Dacus.
But the Hilton won't be the only thing new in town. You may have noticed the big building going up across from the Mall at Turtle Creek. Office Depot is set to move into the 27,000 square foot building being developed by Bruce Burrow and David Hocker. Burrow says the original plan called for a restaurant on the site but the deal fell through. Now he says the remaining 5,200 square feet will all be used for retail space instead.
All up and coming projects that show as Dacus says "it's a good time to be in Jonesboro."
