Murder Mistrial Declared after Witness Talks, Jurors Read Paper

JONESBORO, AR - A judge in Jonesboro has declared a mistrial of a woman's murder trial after a witness acknowledged discussing her testimony with her husband and several jurors said they'd read newspaper coverage of the trial.

Sonya Nate Mooney, 33, of Jonesboro, is charged with capital murder for the March 22, 2006, slaying of 27-year-old Veronica Renee Jenkins.  No new trial date was set, and Mooney complained about having to remain behind bars.

Circuit Judge Pam Honeycutt declared the mistrial after some jurors acknowledged they'd seen a headline in The Jonesboro Sun that said a witness testified that steak knives in Jenkins' home matched the murder weapon.
