LITTLE ROCK, AR - The state Highway and Transportation Dept. has declared safe the eleven bridges in Arkansas with designs similar to the one in Minnesota that collapsed.
The bridges needed no emergency fixes after being inspected following the August 1 collapse in Minneapolis. But highway department spokesman Glenn Bolick says the results will be further analyzed by engineers so non-emergency repairs can be made as needed.
Arkansas has more than 12,000 bridges. Bolick says inspectors check each of the state's bridges at least twice a year.
Of the state's steel-deck truss bridges, five are operated by counties and six are within the state highway system.
