CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - More than $60,000 donated to former Representative Nathan Cooper will be given to Cape Girardeau-area charities after his guilty plea in an immigration fraud scheme.
That's because there's no longer any way to give it back to its original donors.
The Cape Girardeau Republican requested that surplus money from his campaign account be transferred to a committee fund just days before his guilty plea.
Committee treasurer Victor Gunn says Cooper hadn't told him about the upcoming court appearance.
Cooper, who specialized in immigration law as an attorney, pleaded guilty last week to visa fraud and making a false statement to the Department of Labor.
