BATESVILLE, AR - Authorities say an Independence County sheriff's deputy totaled his police car over the weekend as he tried to read a text message while driving.
Deputy Michael Carr says he was traveling north on U.S. 167 when he received a text message on his police-issued handheld radio.
In a report to Sheriff Keith Bowers, Carr says he rear-ended a car that had pulled in front of him. Carr says his 1999 Ford Crown Victoria then went airborne and struck a chain-link fence at the Batesville Regional Airport.
No one was seriously injured.
Sheriff Bowers says a new policy requires officers to be parked when reading text messages.
