Arkansas Expert Says Merit Pay Worthy Idea

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - A University of Arkansas education policy expert says a privately funded merit pay plan in elementary schools in Arkansas suggests the idea is worth trying in Oklahoma.

Gary Ritter appeared before a state House committee in its first meeting on merit pay.

Ritter says a survey found that a pilot project at elementary schools in Little Rock showed increases in math scores and teachers reported having a positive work environment.  He also said, though, there's no overwhelming evidence showing merit pay can be useful in improving student achievement.
