Truckers Can Throw Away Bill for Obsolete Tax

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Dept. says trucking companies don't have to pay a tax bill the agency mistakenly mailed.

The notices were for a $5 per-vehicle fee that the Legislature eliminated in its session earlier this year.

The tax was done away with so the state would be in compliance with the federal United Carrier Act of 2005.  That law will replace the Single State Registration System with the Unified Carrier Registration.  The state will no longer need the fee because it won't administer its own registry.

The Arkansas Trucking Association says the state collected about $2 million last year from those fees.
