Memphis Neighborhoods Struggle with Prostitution

MEMPHIS, TN - Residents and business owners in a south Memphis neighborhood want more to be done to stop the ebb and flow of prostitution there.

George Buzard, owner of Gates Lumber in the Bellvue Boulevard area, says police will crack down on the rampant prostitution that goes on near his business, driving it away.

But, he says, it just comes back when police let up for a while.

About 20 percent of the more than 700 prostitution-related arrests in Shelby County this year were made in that neighborhood, a couple miles south of the downtown medical district.

Police are trying to fight the problem through random stings, sometimes as often as three times a week.

Buzard says he would like the city to begin targeting spots that allegedly harbor prostitution, such as motels, in the same way several recent stings have targeted illegal activity at strip clubs.
