Forestry Commission Reports 175 Fires So Far in August

JONESBORO, AR - The Arkansas Forestry Commission says firefighters have responded to 175 forest fires so far during August, when temperatures soared to over 100 degrees in nearly all areas of the state.

Fires consumed about 1,500 acres.  A fire near Holly Grove last week destroyed an unoccupied home and threatened three other homes.  Burn bans are in effect for more than two-thirds of the state's 75 counties, including 16 counties in Region 8.

A bulldozer crew from the Forestry Commission assisted Jonesboro and Southridge firefighters in battling a large brushfire Sunday afternoon in south Jonesboro.

Forestry Commission spokeswoman Christina Fowler says that under the dry conditions, it's important for homeowners living near woods to assess their risk from a grass, brush or forest fire.
