Police Evidence Room, Drug Buy Money Being Investigated at Beebe

BEEBE, AR - The mayor of Beebe says state police have been called in to investigate how money used for undercover drug buys was managed at the police department.

Mayor Mike Robertson says legislative auditors found problems and told prosecutors there should be an investigation.

Former police chief Don Inns was fired by Robertson on August 5.  Inns says he kept a ledger for the spending.

Robertson says the police evidence room is in disarray.  He says only the chief had a key to the evidence room since the first of the year.  The mayor says untagged guns and drugs were found in drawers in the chief's office.

The city council has approved hiring acting chief Wayne Bellew as the permanent replacement for Inns.
