Arkansas Soldier on Leave from Iraq Dies in Boating Accident

PLAINVIEW, AR - Officials say an Arkansas National Guard soldier on a two-week leave from Iraq was killed in a boating accident.

Sergeant Michael Lee Chenoweth, 29, of Plainview, died early yesterday after the accident on Petit Jean River east of Centerville.

The Arkansas National Guard says Chenowith was on a rest and recuperation leave from Iraq when he was killed.  He was on his second tour of Iraq.

Major General William D. Wofford said it is "devastating to know" that Chenowith died at home while away from the dangers of Iraq.

Chenowith was deployed with Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Fires Brigade, based in Ozark.  The battery was mobilized in February, and is scheduled to return home in early 2008.
