Region 8-Based Seed Company Goes Out of Business

McCRORY, AR - A Region 8-based seed company that promoted itself as the "Soybean of the South" has apparently gone out of business.

McCrory-based Delta King Seed Company closed and gave employees, including its regional sales team, two weeks' severance pay.

The company was established in 1992, and reportedly owed millions of dollars in technology fees to the Monsanto Corporation after it allegedly overestimated the amount of seed it could sell.  As late as 2002, Delta King had 18 soybean and seven wheat varieties and owned much of the soybean market in the Mississippi Delta.

Most of the company's wheat and soybean varieties have been transferred to Cullum Seeds LLC in Fisher, in Poinsett County.
