Ex-Memphis Cop Sentenced to 18 Months for Shaking Down Motorists

MEMPHIS, TN - A former Memphis police officer was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing money from motorists.

Trennis Swims pleaded guilty in May to civil rights violations for surreptitiously stealing cash from two drivers while on duty as a Memphis police officer in 2006.

Swims will be on federal supervised release for one year after he is released from prison.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and the Memphis Police Department Security Squad.

Some two dozen Memphis police officers have been charged with corruption since 2004.
