Southeast Missouri Man Faces Charges of Sexual Assault

PEMISCOT COUNTY, MO. -- A teacher's aide in Region 8 is charged with two counts of sexual assault of a minor.  51-year-old Michael Willard Smith worked in the South Pemiscot School District in Steele, Missouri.

Smith faces one count of Statutory Sodomy in the Second Degree and one count of Deviant Sexual Assault; both charges are Class "C" Felonies.

According to school officials, Smith has been an employee of the South Pemiscot Special School District, but worked on the campus of the South Pemiscot School District in Steele, Missouri as a teacher's aide.

"I believe the student was sixteen.  These two charges are in regards to the same incident," said Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Hazel.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the case, the assault happened at Smith's home.  Hazel said there are special circumstances to this case.

"We allege that he did this without the persons consent because our allegations will be that the person did not have the mental capacity to consent," said Hazel.

On Monday the court set Smith's bond at $100,000 and his next date to appear set for October first.  The big question now is, will more alleged victims come forward.

"I really can't comment on that at this point, I know the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department is still investigating that so that remains to be seen," said Hazel.

And every suspect is considered innocent until proven guilty.
