Arkansas GOP Director Says Immigration Reform Could Hurt Business

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The director of Arkansas' Republican Party told a GOP lawmaker in an e-mail that efforts to crack down on illegal immigration could make the party look racist and hurt efforts to attract businesses to the state.

State Republican Executive Director Karen Ray wrote that legislators should instead work on economic policies that create jobs.

Ray acknowledged that she sent the e-mail that was posted on the Arkansas Times blog.  Ray says the e-mail was meant to be a private conversation and would not identify the lawmaker who was the recipient.

Ray's comments came as some Republican lawmakers have been pushing for stricter laws against illegal immigrants.

Republican Representative Rick Green of Van Buren says he intends to ask Ray how she got involved in immigration discussions before the Legislature.
