Public Service Commission Tours Proposed Power Plant Site

FULTON, AR - Members of the Arkansas Public Service Commission toured the site of a proposed $1.3 billion coal-fired power plant yesterday.  Then they toured a cypress swamp about two miles away.

PSC chairman Paul Suskie says there are two competing interests: economic development and protecting the nature of the area.  Suskie says the commission will have to make "tough judgements" on the case.

Southwestern Electric Power Company wants to build a 600-megawatt plant on 2,800 acres in Hempstead County, two miles from Fulton.
