Sikeston Hosts Public Forum on Need for New Mississippi River Bridge

SIKESTON, MO - More than 150 people met in Sikeston earlier this week to discuss the situation of the bridges that span the Mississippi river connecting southeast Missouri and Kentucky.

City, county and state officials from Missouri and Kentucky gathered, as well as concerned residents.

The bridge near Cairo, Illinois was built in 1929 and was designed for vehicles of that era, as well as animals and foot traffic.  With the recent collapse of a Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis, that makes for uneasy thoughts regarding the Cairo bridge.

According to the National Bridges Inventory, the bridge on U.S. 60 is at the top of a list of the ten lowest sufficiency ratings on the river between Minneapolis and New Orleans.
