Federal Bill Would Prevent Unnecessary Purchase of Flood Insurance

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Senators Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln have introduced legislation aimed at preventing property owners from having to buy flood insurance unnecessarily.

The Democratic senators from Arkansas say the measure would stop the Federal Emergency Management Agency from imposing so-called Zone X warnings on communities protected by federally certified levees.  The senators say the warnings could spur mortgage lenders to require homeowners and business owners in certain places to buy flood insurance that they don't need.

The measure would modify the FEMA directive so that flood insurance maps differentiate between properties that are protected by federally certified levees and those that are not.
