OSHA Fines SE Missouri Manufacturer

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Federal officials are fining a southeast Missouri manufacturer of petroleum storage tanks for alleged safety violations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said it's levying a fine of $148,500 against Mid-South Steel Products.

The agency says it found 14 violations, three of which it calls "willful" in a routine inspection of the company's Cape Girardeau plant.

Regulators say the violations include failing to adequately protect workers from falls and failing to maintain employee respirators or train employees on their use.

Company president Sonny Underwood says Mid-South will request a hearing to get more information on the allegations.  He says the company has never had an accident.
