LITTLE ROCK, AR - Rice growers in Arkansas harvested a record 160 bushels per acre in 2007, nearly five bushels per acre more than the previous mark.
The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture said Monday that farmers planted about 1.3 million acres of rice this year.
Dry weather in March and April allowed growers to plant early. Cooperative Extension Service program coordinator Stewart Runsick says earlier planting seems to result in higher yields. Runsick also says that temperatures were cooler during flowering, which contributed to higher yields and better quality.
Arkansas is the nation's leading rice producer.
