Director Says Memphis PD Reorganization will Cut Crime in City

MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis City Council has approved a plan by Police Director Larry Godwin to reorganize his department.

It requires appointing 10 new managers at salaries of around $100,000 a year.

The new managers will head the city's precincts and the director can hire and fire them at will, without civil service protection.

Godwin says the jobs are based on performance and he'll hire executives who will carry out the crime fighting goals of city administration.

Appointees are expected to come from within the Police Department.

The reorganization is expected to be in place by January 1.
