Searcy School Bus Driver Looks at Career in Rearview

SEARCY, AR - Nelson James drove a bus in the Searcy School District for 21 years.  And the children who rode Bus #6 remember him for unique punishments, including making a boy eat a crumpled piece of paper the child threw out the window.

James, who recently retired, climbed aboard bus #6 and slid into the driver's seat recently just as he had hundreds of times before and reminisced about his days toting kids to and from school.

Other tales James remembers include getting free meals at McDonalds on field trips and getting free tickets from the namesake of Bud Walton Arena while waiting for students to finish a trip to the University of Arkansas.

Even though he says he'd still enjoy it, James decided to retire because his reflexes aren't what they used to be.  He also is looking forward to spending more time with his wife, Georgia, four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Searcy.  James also stays active by working at the downtown Regions Bank branch.
