St. Francis County Man Recovering from Deer Attack

COLT, AR - An 84-year-old Colt man is recovering at home after being attacked by a deer on Thanksgiving day.

Deputies with the St. Francis County Sheriff's Department were called to the home of J.W. Mitchell in Colt after the attack.  According to a police report, Mitchell was inside his home at about 7:30 a.m. when he heard his dog howling behind the house, where the animal was tied up.  When Mitchell went outside to check on the dog, he found an 8-point buck fighting with the dog.  Mitchell, armed only with a cane, armed with a cane, approached the deer, when the animal turned and attacked him.

"It wasn't a very big buck, but it had eight points and they were very sharp," said Captain Gene Wingo of the Sheriff's Dept.  "It's lucky that it didn't do more damage to Mr. Mitchell than it did.  He was cut up pretty bad and bruised, but otherwise okay."

The attack ended when Mitchell's neighbor shot and killed the deer.

Mitchelll was taken to a Forrest City hospital by private vehicle, where he was treated and released.
