State Buys Old Jefferson County Jail

PINE BLUFF, AR - The Arkansas Board of Corrections will purchase Jefferson County's former jail for $3 million.

The panel voted unanimously Friday to purchase a 106-bed county jail, which is located in the same building as the 430-bed state prison in Pine Bluff.  The state Department of Corrections previously moved some prisoners into the jail last weekend, signaling the deal likely would be approved.

The county jail has been staffed by state prison guards for more than 10 years under a previous agreement.

Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler says the state will pay off the purchase over five years.

Jefferson County opened its new 304-bed W.C. "Dub" Brassell Adult Detention Center in March.
