Lawmaker Hopes to Encourage Recycling of Plastic Foam

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - A legislator says she hopes to discourage the use of Styrofoam cups and plates at Arkansas' state capitol as she tries to expand recycling of the plastic foam material in the state.

Representative Kathy Webb says she doesn't know if she'll try again in 2009 to pass a bill she unsuccessfully pushed this year that would have required landfills to offer polystyrene recycling.  The measure failed after landfill operators said it would be too costly.

Webb, a restaurant owner from Little Rock, says she's stopped using Styrofoam cups and plates at her business, instead relying on paper or sugarcane-based containers.  She said she hopes to encourage the cafeteria at the state Capitol to also phase out the plastic foam containers, but said it's not something she's going to try with legislation.
