NEWTON, IOWA - Mike Huckabee won't say whether he thinks Mormonism is a cult.
Huckabee is a one-time Southern Baptist preacher, whose standing with Republican voters in Iowa has surged with the help of Christian evangelicals. He's moved from the back of the pack, and is now challenging longtime leader Mitt Romney, a Mormon, in the GOP polls in Iowa.
Huckabee says he's not going to evaluate other people's faiths. He says that's "absolutely not a role for a president."
His comments come during a week in which religion has become an important issue in the Republican presidential race.
Romney is planning to address his faith in a major speech tomorrow in Texas.
