Melbourne - A former Melbourne school teacher has been charged with taking minors across state lines, witness tampering, and attempting to travel with minors related to criminal sexual activity.
A federal grand jury handed down the five counts to Steven Mitchell, 33, of Pineville, Arkansas on Wednesday. Mitchell is under house arrest and has been given permission by a judge to spend the holidays with family.
Mitchell was originally charged in April with 12 counts involving sexual misconduct with students. Federal prosecutors accuse him of taking students across state lines on field trips to engage in sexual acts. The charges filed this week will replace the earlier charges.
The indictment states several FFA (Future Farmers of America) trips were chaperoned by Mitchell from 1998 to 2003 in Washington D.C., Atlanta, Indianapolis, Chicago, Orlando, and San Antonio. He is also alledged by the indictment to have solicited students for sexual activity on the Melbourne Campus.
