Rock Group's Singer Arrested for DWI in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, AR - Austin Winkler, lead singer of the Oklahoma City-based rock group Hinder, faces a January 2 court day on a driving-while-intoxicated citation after he was stopped for driving with no headlights at night in Jonesboro.

Jonesboro Patrolman Anthony Zaffarano said in a report that, after he stopped the sport utility vehicle Winkler was driving about 11:30 p.m. Friday, he could smell a strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle.  Winkler told the officer the headlights weren't on because the SUV wasn't his, and he wasn't familiar with its controls.

According to the report, the singer first said that he had drunk two glasses of wine, but later told officers he had consumed four glasses of wine in a 4-hour period.  The report said Winkler told police that the alcohol was consumed at an engagement party at a local restaurant.  The report said Winkler was given a portable breath test at the scene that showed a blood alcohol content of 0.16 percent, twice the level at which a driver is legally deemed drunk in Arkansas.  According to the report, Winkler blew another test at the Craighead County Jail that showed 0.15 percent.

Hinder, formed in 2003, had a major hit in 2006 with "Lips of an Angel."  Hinder received the Rising Star Award in November from the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
