Memphis Judge Refuses to Stop Kwanzaa Celebration in Public Building

MEMPHIS, TN - A judge has refused to stop a Shelby County lawmaker from holding a Kwanzaa party in a public building, ruling that the celebration would not be a religious gathering.

County Commissioner Henri Brooks organized the party, open to the public, held Wednesday night at the county's main administration building.

Probate Court Clerk Chris Thomas filed a lawsuit to block it, arguing he was denied permission to hold a Christmas party in a public building.

Judge Walter L. Evans dismissed the suit.  Lawyers for Brooks argued the party would not violate rules against religious gatherings in public places.
